Trees of Knowledge is back to give away another outdoor classroom

- Canadian schools can enter now for a chance to win a $20,000 outdoor classroom from MAJESTA, Tree Canada and Focus on Forests -

TORONTO (November 24, 2011)–The Trees of Knowledge™ program is back for 2012 and will award one eco-conscious school a complete, customized outdoor classroom, valued at $20,000. The program was created last year by MAJESTA, the soft and green choice for household paper products, in partnership with Tree Canada and Focus on Forests to help teachers and students experience the benefits of being outdoors. All Canadian schools can apply by visiting www.majesta.com and entering before January 27, 2012.

“We created the Trees of Knowledge program to help educate Canadian students and teachers about the importance of environmental sustainability. The winning school gets to see the benefits in action with an outdoor classroom,” says Jim Schedler, Vice President of Marketing for MAJESTA. “Judging from the impressive entries we received last year, many Canadian schools, teachers and students are passionate about the environment. The contest has taken root in its first year and we are looking to branch out and receive submissions from all across Canada this year.”

Last year’s program received more than 50 applications from schools across the country. The creative submissions included ideas that ranged from composting initiatives to the design of a living roof, which would feature plant life growing from it. The winning submission, from St. Paul Elementary School in Beaconsfield, Quebec, outlined how the classroom would be used to enrich learning experiences and foster an appreciation for the environment.

“We want to thank all the schools that entered in 2011. We’re very excited about the new elements of our program for 2012, which includes the addition of a video component and allowing 2011 applicants to make minimal changes to their entry from last year and to resubmit,” says Schedler. “Interested schools should visit www.majesta.com for more information and resubmit or apply for the first time to our Trees of Knowledge program. It’s an innovative way to drive home the importance of the environment to the next generation.”

The winning school will receive:

· A customized outdoor classroom, valued at $20,000.

· The outdoor classroom can include things like topsoil, boulders/furniture (large rocks, logs/stumps), coniferous trees, deciduous trees, shrubs, or planters.

· Trees of Knowledge program partners, Tree Canada, an organization dedicated to empowering communities to develop and maintain their green infrastructure, will provide technical support to the school. The school will also receive curriculum support through Focus on Forests, a teaching tool that provides hands-on activities and support materials for outdoor learning.

How the Trees of Knowledge competition works:

To enter the Trees of Knowledge competition, schools must submit the following by January 27, 2012:

· A completed application form, available to download at: www.majestatreesofknowledge.ca/apply

· A 400 word essay on why their school is the most worthy candidate for an outdoor classroom

· One to five photos of the school grounds, including the proposed site of the outdoor classroom

· A landscape-site plan

· A letter of commitment for the outdoor classroom project from the School Board

· A two minute video component entry (optional)

Applications will be judged based on criteria such as the strength of the plan, the impact the classroom will have and the longevity and sustainability of the outdoor classroom project. Judges will select the finalist schools from which the winner will be chosen by online voting.

On May 4^th Majesta, partnered with Tree Canada and Focus on Forests, launched their new, educative, Trees of Knowledge Competition. Majesta is giving one lucky Canadian school the chance to win an outdoor classroom valued at $20,000! To learn more about the competition, read the official press release below:

Can getting students outside help get them thinking outside the box? Can a little extra sunshine make students a little brighter? To help teachers and students experience the benefits of being outdoors, MAJESTA, the soft and green choice for household paper products, has created its Trees of Knowledge™ program. “Dating back as far as Sir Isaac Newton’s discovery of gravity while sitting under a tree, educators and students have benefited from learning in outdoor classrooms. Georgetown Reminds Us Of Our Roots

On October 2nd Trees by the Shore celebrated a milestone tree planting event with Juno award-winning musician and Trees by the Shore spokesperson, David Usher. Our 50th tree planting event took place in Georgetown, Ontario with over 150 trees being planted in Cedarvale Park despite the rain. The park will also receive over 1,000 new trees in the coming weeks.

While the 50th event is an impressive accomplishment, we think every tree planting event is equally important. We’re proud to have been able to help green so many communities across Canada with over 45,000 trees planted in the past two years.

Majesta and Tree Canada would like to thank David Usher, P.O.W.E.R. (Protect Our Water Environmental Resources), Rick Bonnette, the Mayor of Halton Hills and especially all the volunteers for taking part in this celebration.

David Usher to Celebrate Planting Milestone in Georgetown

Trees by the Shore, is celebrating its 50th tree planting event by welcoming Juno Award winning musician and Trees by the Shore spokesperson David Usher to Georgetown, ON.

The program brings together school children, Girl Guides, Scouts and local conservation groups to plant native trees near shorelines in 25 Canadian communities each year. Included in the program are lesson plans whereby students will learn about the benefits of trees near waterways including: maintaing water quality, minimizing soil erosion and providing habitat for wildlife.

“We are excited to participate in the 50th Trees by the Shore planting event alongside Tree Canada: a valued partner who shares our tree planting objectives,” says Jim Schedler, Vice President of Marketing for Majesta.

On October 2nd, David Usher will be celebrating the 50th event of the program in Georgetown, ON, at Cedarvale Park where approximately 1,500 trees will be planted in the Silver Creek area by Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources (P.O.W.E.R.), the partner in Halton Hills for the Tree Canada/Majesta project. “We are especially grateful that this project is highlighted and that David Usher will be joining us in our Community during the International Year of Biological Diversity and there are many things we can all do to protect our precious web of life,” said Leslie Adams General Manager of P.O.W.E.R.

“We are so pleased to be welcoming David Usher’s support for our program as we conduct this planting in Georgetown,” said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada. “Trees by the Shore shows us how interconnected trees are with the natural world and provides a lasting environmental legacy in each community that participates.”

“David is a nationally recognized Canadian musical talent and a friend of the environment. He is lending his support to Trees by the Shore to help us bring attention to the need to plant more trees in urban locations across the country,” says Mr. Rosen.

An Educational Experience in Edmundston

MAJESTA and Tree Canada’s Trees by the Shore tree planting tour stopped off in Edmundston for a tree planting experience like no other this year. School children, aged 12-14, all over Edmundston are taking part in ‘Education Plus’ summer camps in an effort to plant approximately 1,600 trees near the waterways in an effort to beautify the city. The future is looking a lot greener in Northern New Brunswick.

Planting on The Rock

In order to help preserve the local habitat around Long Pond in Avalon, Newfoundland, over 1,500 trees were planted by volunteers groups at the MAJESTA and Tree Canada’s Trees by the Shore tree planting in June. As the planting season slowly winds down, we’re pleased to see that the number of community groups working together is still growing. Great job everyone!

Sunny Summer Tree Planting in Sussex

It was a beautiful, sunny day in Sussex for one of the biggest Trees by the Shore tree planting events to date. Tree Canada President, Michael Rosen and President of Irving Consumer Products, Robert Irving assisted over one hundred volunteers in planting roughly 1,600 trees in an outstanding community effort to help restore the riparian areas along the Kenebecasis River.

“Along with offering shade to the river and therefore luring species of fish that need cold water, the trees will also help slow down the erosion that is happening along the river banks.” said Michael Rosen. He said the roots of the trees bind the soil together and discourages erosion.

New Seedlings in Saskatoon

Just outside of Saskatoon in Chappell Marsh, something special took place on June 9th. Students and volunteers from the surrounding community joined MAJESTA and Tree Canada during a Trees by the Shore tree planting event to plant over 1,100 trees, helping develop the riparian areas. As well, the students from Hugh Cairns V.C. Public School received an extended lesson on the importance of biodiversity in our environment, and even had a chance to build their very own birdhouses.

Special thanks to Ducks Unlimited, the University of Saskatchewan Centre for Continuing & Distance Education, and TD Canada Trust for dedicating their time and effort to this great cause.

Tree Planting in Cantley, Quebec With David Usher

May 15th was a big day for MAJESTA and Tree Canada as the 2010 tree planting season officially kicked off in Cantley, Quebec.

Juno award winning musician David Usher, the spokesperson for Trees by the Shore, was on hand at the event to lend his support and even plant a few trees himself.

"It's very tangible," he said. "You get your hands dirty. You can see the results right away. We are planting 1,600 trees today." Usher also said the program is admirable because it encourages people to get involved and help better their community. [Ottawa Citizen, May 16, 2010]

Trees by the Shore Welcomes David Usher’s Support

Trees by the Shore, an innovative national initiative that aims to sustain urban forests throughout our country, is celebrating its 1st anniversary by welcoming Juno Award winning musician David Usher as a supporter of the program.

The program brings together school children, Girl Guides, Scouts and local conservation groups to plant over 37 000 native trees along waterways in 25 Canadian communities. Included in the program are lesson plans whereby students will learn about the benefits of trees including; maintaining water quality, minimizing soil erosion and providing habitat for wildlife.

David Usher will be kicking off his support for the program in Cantley, Québec on May 15th where approximately 1,500 trees will be planted along the shore of the Gatineau River by members of Les Amis du Parc Mary Anne Phillips.

“We are so pleased to be welcoming David Usher’s support for our program as we conduct this planting in Cantley,” said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada. “Trees by the Shore shows us how interconnected trees are with the natural world and provides a lasting environmental legacy in each community that participates.”

Ontario’s youth help green Canada by planting trees

About 100 volunteers, including the local Scouts, made Guelph a little greener on April 25th. Ed Borczon from Tree Canada led the group in planting over 1,500 trees.

As well, Great Gorge & Fireman’s Park in Niagara Falls utilized all 14 of their volunteers from Katimavik Youth to plant over 750 cedar trees on May 27th with the intention of planting another 750 this fall. Tree Canada’s Ed Borczon was also present at this event.

Pontiac, QC planting makes the grade

On May 19th, students from École Primaire L’Envolée in Pontiac, Quebec, along with volunteers from Sainte-Anne, decided it was time they become the teacher and show they know a thing or two about planting trees.

The planting of 1,583 trees was completed by sixty students and community leaders including Michael Rosen (President of Tree Canada), Réjean Dugas (MRC du Pontiac), Paul-Émile Malot (Mayor of Ile-du-Grand Calumet), Gerry Phillipe (Office of Hon. Lawrence Cannon, MP Pontiac) and Édouard Martineau (Groupement forestier du Pontiac).

Oromocto, NB scouts out the perfect planting location

May 9th was a big day for the Oromocto chapter of the Scouts of Canada. MP Keith Ashfield and Mayor Faye Tidd led over 100 Scouts, leaders and parents in planting over 1,700 trees in Anniversary Park, in Oromocto West.

It took all day but, as the Scouts say, they’re ‘Creating a better world’.

Medicine Hat, AB gets back to their roots

Sometimes it takes only a few driven volunteers to make something special happen. 12 members of the Grasslands Naturalists group rallied together to plant over 1,500 trees in only one day.

Gerard Fournier of Tree Canada advised the group and helped show what a community that cares about the environment can accomplish.

A fun day planting trees at Calgary's Bow River

Over 100 people from the Langevin Science School in Calgary decided that this June it was time to grow their population. Their tree population that is.

By planting 1,575 trees, they not only helped the environment but also drew the interest of the local public with many of those that passed by stopping to ask questions or chat about what the volunteers were doing.

Ernie Yukiw, Majesta’s Western Canadian Sales Manager was on hand, as were City of Calgary employees and several media outlets.

Laurierville Gets a Little Greener

The little town of Laurierville, Quebec appeared a lot larger on June 13th when a number of caring community members came out to plant over 1,580 trees. Being a small population of only 1,400 people, Laurierville prides itself on its greenery and was excited to take advantage of its MAJESTA and Tree Canada Trees by the Shore tree planting event in order to improve carbon capture in the area.

Christian Paradis, the Minister of Natural Resources, was on hand for the event and was impressed with the effort put forward by the small town. Thanks again to everyone who attended the event and showed up to lend their support!

Tree Canada and Majesta take Moncton, NB by storm in this edition of TREE-NN, filmed on Saturday, May 30th, 2009.

In this episode, Boy Scouts, Beavers and Cubs joined community leaders and volunteers for a day of planting at the Moncton backup reservoir – a clean water supply often needed throughout dry summer months. (May 30 – Moncton, NB) Irving Tissue, through their Majesta brand of paper products, has teamed up with Tree Canada, the country’s largest tree planting organization, to create a new partnership aimed at delivering a unique tree planting program to Canadians. Tree Canada President Michael Rosen and Irving Tissue President Robert Irving have recently signed an agreement to launch a major urban tree planting initiative called Trees by the Shore.

On May 30th, the program brought Boy Scouts, Beavers and Irving Tissue employees together with Tree Canada employees to plant trees near the City of Moncton’s Backup Water Supply located on McLaughlin Road. As a part of this planting event, Tree Canada employees delivered an educational experience to the children and volunteers about the benefits of trees including; maintaining water quality, minimizing soil erosion and providing habitat for wildlife.

Over the course of the 2009 planting season, over 37,500 trees will be planted though events like this one in 25 communities in 10 provinces across Canada.

“The Irving name is synonymous with progressive forestry practices in Canada,” said Michael Rosen. “We are so proud to be associated with this great Canadian company and their Majesta brand of paper products. The Trees by the Shore program will show children how interconnected trees are with the natural world. Together with the Majesta brand, we will be bringing communities together to learn, understand and protect the natural spaces where they live,” he said.

Majesta paper products come from woodlands which are third party certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative standard (SFI). Irving has a strong commitment to environmental protection and saw its goals fit perfectly with Tree Canada’s mandate.

British Columbia celebrates Earth Day!

April 22nd was a busy day for Tree Planting in British Columbia as both the cities of Coquitlam and Chilliwack took to the shorelines in an effort to plant 3745 trees.

In Coquitlam, City Councillor Mae Reid and Parks and Recreation Manager Selina Robinson joined volunteers from the Hoy/Scott Watershed Society, Gleneagle High School, Eagle Ridge Elementary School. Pinetree Secondary School, Eagle Rodge Bible School and the Pentecostal Assembly of Canada at Scott Creek to plant over 745 trees and shrubs.

In Chilliwack, over the course of 2 days, 3000 Douglas Fir seedlings were planted at the Bailey Landfill along Jefferson Creek thanks to the hard work of 12 local scouts, and 49 grade 8 students from Highroad Academy School.
